Beyond Borders: Royan Institute Expands Comprehensive Care for International Patients

Royan Institute’s International Patients Department (IPD) has developed a coordinated support system for international patients seeking infertility and related medical services, covering the treatment journey from pre-travel medical assessment and appointment scheduling to interpretation, treatment coordination and follow-up after patients return to their home countries.

According to the Public Relations and International Affairs of Royan Institute For patients traveling abroad for medical treatment, receiving appropriate medical care is only one part of the process. Access to reliable information, communication with medical specialists, coordination of appointments, travel arrangements and continuity of care after returning home can also play an important role in the overall treatment experience.

At Royan Institute, the International Patients Department has been established to facilitate this process for patients from different countries and cultural backgrounds and to help them navigate the medical and administrative aspects of their treatment.

International patients can start the treatment process before traveling to Iran by sending their medical records to Royan Institute’s International Patients Department via WhatsApp. The records may include a copy of the passport, previous medical and infertility treatment records, laboratory and ultrasound results, imaging reports, and previous IVF or ICSI records, if available. The medical team reviews the documents and, based on the patient’s condition, determines the appropriate time for consultation and treatment. In some cases, the timing of the visit may also need to be coordinated with the patient’s menstrual cycle. Patients may be asked to provide additional tests or medical reports if further evaluation is needed.

The International Patients Department coordinates appointments and communication between international patients and the relevant medical teams at Royan Institute. Patients can receive online or in-person consultations, be referred to the appropriate specialists, and, when necessary, obtain a medical treatment letter for visa procedures. Translation and interpretation services are also available in English, Arabic, French, Turkish and Kurdish.

For patients traveling to Iran for treatment, the department can also help with some of the practical arrangements. If requested, patients can be introduced to trusted medical tourism partners for hotel accommodation, airport transfers and other services. Assistance with sightseeing and pilgrimage programs can also be arranged for those who are interested.

Follow-up continues after patients return to their home countries. They can stay in contact with Royan Institute through email, online calls or messaging applications, and online consultations can be arranged when needed. At the end of treatment, patients receive a summary of their medical care, post-treatment instructions and relevant medical records, including laboratory and imaging results, in accordance with the institute’s procedures.

Treatment costs vary depending on the patient’s condition and the treatment required. After reviewing the patient’s medical records, the medical team can provide an initial estimate. The final cost depends on the treatment protocol, medications, additional tests and any procedures that may be required. Due to current regulations and conditions in Iran, treatment fees for international patients are currently accepted in cash at the institute.

The current consultation and treatment tariffs for international patients are available on Royan Institute’s website:  https://inf.royan.org/En/Treatmenttariffs

The presence of both partners is required at the beginning of treatment and for certain medical and legal procedures, including signing the necessary consent forms. Depending on the treatment, however, it may not be necessary for both partners to remain present throughout the entire process. The length of stay in Iran also varies from patient to patient. A complete IVF cycle generally takes around 30 to 45 days, although additional tests or procedures may require a longer stay.

Royan Institute has decades of experience in reproductive medicine and infertility treatment. More than 55,000 successful births through assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have been reported at the institute. Its fertility services are supported by specialist physicians, embryologists and IVF and genetics laboratories.

As with any infertility treatment, the outcome varies according to individual circumstances, including the woman’s age, ovarian reserve and egg quality, sperm quality, embryo quality, the cause of infertility and the type of treatment. For this reason, treatment success cannot be expressed as a single rate applicable to all patients.

The medical and personal information of international patients is kept confidential in accordance with professional standards and applicable regulations. At the end of treatment, patients are provided with the information and medical documents they need for continued care in their home countries.
